West Virginia State Women’s Tennis opened up their spring campaign with a 9-0 victory over Blufield State.
Senior Nina Dillwald and Sophomore Kierstin Hensley lead the way with an 8-1 match at #1 doubles. Junior Kayla McKnight and Freshman Sydney Miller picked up an 8-2 win at #2 doubles.
Laura Isbey, two-time Mountain East Conference Player of the Year, won straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at #1 singles. Hensley also picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at #2 singles.
Dillwald was up 2-0 in her first set before her opponent retired due to illness.
Freshman Hanna Kruglova won in her first singles match 6-3,6-0 at #4 singles. Freshman Nika Tadic also won 6-0, 6-0 at #5 singles losing only five points throughout both sets.
The Yellow Jackets won #6 singles and #3 doubles by forfeit as the Big Blues did not have a sixth player on their roster.
“It was exciting to play the first match of the season,” Isbey said. “It was also extra motivating that we all played well and didn’t lose a match.”
The spring season usually brings stiffer competition on both a regional and national level. The Lady Yellow Jackets play today at Division 1 Radford.
