After coming off their most successful season to date, the women’s tennis team only lost one player to graduation; veteran Nina Dillwald. Because of losing only one player from last year’s squad, head coach John Simms only brought in one freshman addition.
That freshman is Chante Malo, who hails from Stockton on Tees in England.
Malo is adjusting to life away from England. “I really like West Virginia so far,” she said. “The weather is so nice compared to England. “
Malo enjoys the differences between the U.K. and the U.S.A. “America is definitely different compared to England, like the people and the cultures. But I am learning so many things about different people on campus and it’s really interesting to find out.”
Malo is ready for the challenge that comes with being a student athlete.
Malo said her teammates and head coach helped her arrival to the U.S. go so smoothly. “I really like the girls, and they’re all so nice. Coach and the girls have been so welcoming.”
The Yellow Jackets Women’s Tennis Team will have their first competition of the year September 15-16 at the Kenyon Invitational, at Kenyon College in Kenyon, Ohio.
“I expect to get accustomed to the way of life of both being a student and an athlete. I want to learn from my peers and my teammates as to how they manage to combine both aspects and be able to contribute positively to the team and the academic aspect as well.”
Head Coach John Simms is impressed with what he sees so far from the freshman, “She’s very talented and has a great work ethic. I expect big things from her career at WVSU.”
