Yellow Jacket baseball enters MEC play with 5-2 and 5-4 doubleheader wins over national powerhouse Mercyhurst. With a non-conference record 7-4, the Yellow Jackets are the current leaders of the MEC South Division.
Pitcher Colby Gainer hurled the Yellow Jackets to the 5-2 upset win of Mercyhurst last Friday in the American Baseball Classic held in Wilson, North Carolina. The Lakers entered the contest 6-0 and ranked #4 nationally.
The Elkins native held them scoreless for the first six innings while facing the minimum three batters in four frames and just four in the other two before Mercyhurst scored two meaningless runs in the final inning. Trevor Sampson drove in three runs to pace WVSU.
Gainer was named the MEC Pitcher of the Week for his impressive two run complete game against Mercyhurst.
The Yellow Jackets play their MEC opener against Notre Dame on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets women’s softball team is 12-6 and are on a 5-game winning streak, defeating Alderson Broaddus, Ohio Valley, and #16 West Chester University of Pennsylvania.
The Yellow Jackets are led by top hitter Brittany Allison who has an MEC league high 24 hits along with a .453 batting average, which puts her in fifth place overall in the MEC for batting averages.
The top pitcher for the Yellow Jackets is Emily Thompson. Thompson has a record of 5-1, with 43 innings pitched. Thompson has only allowed 16 runs in the 43 innings, along with only three home runs.
The Yellow Jackets open play Saturday in the MEC opener against UVA-Wise.
