WVSU men’s basketball team is having a strong season and is trying to keep the momentum going.
With an 18-7 record after a 97-90 win Saturday, Feb. 22, at home against MEC opponent Notre Dame College, the men are having their best season since 2011-12, when they ended 14-13. A lot of key players have stepped up this season. One of these players is redshirt freshman Anthony Pittman from Charleston.
Pittman has put up strong statistics this season. He scored in double figures in 18 of 23 games this season, scorching Notre Dame College for 30 points on Jan. 15. He’s averaging 15 points per game.
“The reason to us having this good of a season is that we got a bunch of winners and people who want to win,” Pittman said.
Asked about the season and his development, he said, “I’ve been playing with older guys all my life, definitely in the summer. I barely play with people my age, so that’s helped me a lot during my freshman year. I just want to be the best for my team.”
The community has taken notice.
“The community on my success has been nothing but positive,” Pittman said. “They keep me going, knowing I get to play in front of them still.”
With two games left, including one against rival University of Charleston, State has a chance to make this season more than merely good.
The Yellow Jacket men complete the regular season on the road against Concord on Wednesday, Feb. 26, and at UC on Saturday, Feb. 29.
The MEC Tournament starts March 4 at Wesbanco Area in Wheeling.
