State students are in an elite group this weekend, one of 48 HBUC universities or colleges to compete in 29th Annual Honda Campus All‐Star Challenge National Championship Tournament (HCASC) Saturday through Wednesday in Los Angeles.
Captain Jesus Rivera looks to lead his team to the $75,000 grand prize offer by Honda. The rest of the team is Jeffery David Mitchell, Kevon Monroe, and Alexander Pierce Bennett. Director of Campus Life Trina Sweeney coaches the group.
The competition test students’ academic ability to answer questions in history, science, literature, religion, arts and pop culture. State passed the qualifying rounds in advancing to the championships.
“This tournament is a phenomenal venue to celebrate the academic success of our nation’s best and brightest,” said President Anthony L. Jenkins.
In 1989, Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) was established to showcase the academic excellence of HBCU students. Honda established the program to support HBCUs because of their unique and critical role in higher education, helping millions of students achieve their dreams. That aligns with Honda’s guiding philosophy, “The Power of Dreams.”
Over 125,000 students have participated.
