One member of the graduating class is delighted he will be absent at his graduation because his daughter graduates May 12 , too.
Communications student Zack Brevard is a 53-year-old senior and student broadcaster. Thirty-one years separate him and his 22-year-old daughter. Akea Robinsonis, graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University.
“My daughter thinks it’s wonderful that I graduate the same semester as her,” said the non-traditional student.
“She has accused me of stealing her spotlight, which is impossible,” said a proud father . “She ‘s graduating with a 4.0 GPA and double majors in Psychology and African American Studies.”
The Dean’s listee plans to bring his cap and gown to VCU for a likely viral photo opportunity with Akea.
“Words cannot express how proud of her I am,” he said. After commencement, the two plan to celebrate in nearby Richmond.
Brevard dedicated day and night to fulfill his dream of a degree. He spent days in class at State while sleepless nights were spent at work, serving as pit manager at Mardi Gras Casino in Cross Lanes. The long hours between school and work made Brevard feel like a zombie, but the hard work Paid off.
The scholar returned to school after 35 years to keep a promise to his mother to finish school.
“I have achieved far beyond my imagination,” he said. “I’ll miss State for the encouragement the students and faculty extended to me. Everyone here has been supportive of my education and growth as a student and a person.”
Brevard intended to graduate last December, but needed to return this semester for a Biology credit. He is a member of Public Relations Student Society of America, National Broadcasting Society and a sports broadcaster for the Yellow Jackets.
