Library’s Ellison Equipment Adds Visual Spice to Student Projects

Did you know State’s Drain-Jordan Library has Ellison machines available for you to make your projects more visually creative?

Library Associate Nancy Sims said an Ellison is a manual cutting machine that uses dies to cut shapes from low-strength materials, such as paper, sponge sheets, magnet sheets, cling sheets and more. The machine offers a variety of shapes, including five different styles of letters offered here.

Sims, an employee at State for more than 25 years, said Ellison machines have been a part of State since 1998.

“We have a good assortment of dies that you can use,” Sims said. “And the surrounding community are welcome to use them. Students often come especially from the education department to make posters, but even now all over campus you can see them being used on bulletin boards.”

Nancy said moving the Ellison machines into a dedicated room made it more visible to students. Now she notices a flow of more people from sports teams and clubs using the Ellison machines for their projects.

Sims said she asked that the machines be moved to the second floor, which also gives students more working space.

Sims said she has all the die samples organized in alphabetical order up on the walls. Materials for projects are available for a set price, but students can bring their own materials. Laminating and binding services are also available.

“They are simple to operate,” Sims said, “but if you’re confused, I’m right here, or anybody downstairs can show you.”

The Drain-Jordan Library hours are:

Aug. 19-Dec. 6 – Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-9 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m-5 p.m.; Saturday, closed; Sunday, 2 p.m.-8 p.m.
