The SGA Senate reconvened on Friday, Jan. 24, for the spring 2020 semester and passed a resolution that added a graduate student as a member of the Senate.
The Senate took up only one bill during short meeting.
SGA Vice President Rachel Harper introduced Senate Resolution 19. A quorum of senators approved passage of the resolution, which increased the number of senators from 12 of 13.
“[Graduate students] are fee-paying students here at State; therefore, they should have a voice in our student Senate,” Sen. Curtis Workman said. “They are paying fees to SGA so they should have a vote as to how those funds are being allocated, as well as how the structure of SGA is made.”
It was Harper’s first meeting as SGA vice president. She succeeded Ryan McCoy, who is taking a legislative internship. She said she is optimistic about the upcoming semester and everything the executive staff has in store.
“We have a lot planned for spring,” she said. “This is the last part of our year, so we are trying to go out with a bang.
“There have been some position changes, and I can tell you that the new treasurer, Chanell Wesley, and chief of staff, Ky’Achia Atkins, have settled into their positions very well,” Harper said.
The next SGA Senate meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, in room 134 of the Student Union. All students are encouraged to attend.
