As one can tell from a glance at State’s website, the college offers many opportunities to its students. One such opportunity is the chance to join one of the many student organizations, which can be found in the Student Organization tab under Current Students. This list, however, does not include every club on campus, as shown by the lack of a listing for the English Club.
Did you know there was an English Club on campus? The club is backed by Dr. Anne McConnell as its faculty sponsor. According to McConnell, the English Club meets on the last Thursday of each month to share writings of all kinds such as poetry, essays, fiction, and literary analysis.
“The Club is open to students of all majors,” McConnell said. “The purpose of the club is to work on our writing, and also to learn about how to submit work for publication, conference presentations, and contests.”
McConnell also mentioned the club leaves campus periodically, such as when a student’s work is accepted by a regional English conference. In that case, the club may travel to that conference together. On campus, the English Club takes part in two annual English Department luncheons, one in the fall and one in the spring.
“At the spring luncheon,” McConnell said, “we announce writing contest winners, and the English Club helps students to prepare entries for those contests.”
The fall luncheon is dated for Oct. 29th in Hill Hall at 12:30. Dr. McConnell and the English Club would like to see the word spread so more people can attend.
