Miss State Making Her Voice Heard

Angelica Willis, Miss State, aspires to be an inspiration to other students on campus. Willis is a communication major and is en route to graduate this May. Willis’ upbringing in New York gave her the ability to talk to anyone. From an early age, Willis believed people’s differences were something to be celebrated. Willis acquired a unique outlook on people by continuously being immersed in different cultures.

Willis thinks it is important for her to not just be an image. She wants to use this opportunity to build a strong platform and leave positive changes on campus. Willis believes it is important to get involved on campus.

Willis is the president of the National Broadcasting Society (NBS) and Pinnacle Honor Society. NBS has travelled many places and continuously wins national awards. Willis is also the secretary of her sorority chapter, Alpha Delta for Delta Sigma Theta. Willis has gained great networking experiences and resources from all the people she has met through her organizations.

Willis also volunteers regularly at her daughter’s after school program here on campus. Majority of the time you will find Miss State accompanied by her daughter, the beautiful Jr. Miss State. Willis uses these experiences as an opportunity to instill positive values in her daughter so that she can grow to become a powerful woman. Willis feels that starting school at age 29 as a single parent has given her a different mindset and different motives.

Willis has exciting opportunities in her field in New York, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and more. However, Willis also considers staying in West Virginia to be close to family. In addition to family, Willis realizes West Virginia needs more people with the skill set she possesses.

After graduation, Willis will miss being so busy all the time. Most importantly, Willis will miss the campus itself because it is a living reminder of where her family started. Her parents met on campus and both of her sibling have graduated from State. Willis even works out of Ferrell Hall next to her grandmother’s old office.

Some advice Willis would give to fellow students would be “Get out there and explore and take advantage of everything and have a plan.” Willis stresses how important it is to be proud of who you are and what you are doing. As Willis would say, “It’s your life and you have to live it.”
