It’s time to register for Cares Day, State’s largest community service event when volunteers participate in dozens of projects, including outdoor clean-up, working with youth, literacy education, serving meals, working in gardens, office work and other worthwhile endeavors.

The 2019 Cares Day takes place on Saturday, April 20. Register at this link.

Volunteers are an integral part of the success of this event as they build relationships and help their fellow Yellow Jackets get connected to community service, according to co-coordinator Kelli Toledo, director of counseling and accessibility services.

“Cares Day is our largest volunteer program on campus, she said.

Project sites around Institute, and in Kanawha and Putnam counties, have already been identified.

In 2018, more than 300 students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends participated, contributing more than 1,300 hours of service at more than 35 sites.

Cares Day is a great opportunity for State students to learn about local organizations and agencies and get their “hands dirty” by volunteering. And coordinators say it’s also fun, with hands-on activities that motivate and involve volunteers while offering a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie.

Joe Oden, assistant vice president of student affairs, is Cares Day coordinator. Fiscal Affairs accountant Jerry Miller and Toledo are co-coordinators.
