Commentary: Create, Invent, Balance, Rejuvenate, Repeat

I am Carla Siegle, a senior at State. I enjoy a healthy lifestyle, balancing mind, body and soul as one. I practice yoga and have been a vegetarian-conscious eater for more than seven years. I’m a philanthropist and a humanitarian as well. Yet I am not an expert, merely a person who likes to offer help for the greater good.

I wanted to write this to help everyone at home balance their emotions and schedules. This commentary is mainly intended for students or anyone who has time on their hands at home.

It is a very natural and normal response to what everyone is feeling now, boredom, wanting to go to places, missing your favorite coffee shop, hanging out with friends and family. Let me tell you something: We can do this!

Here are some tips and ideas for those who want to occupy their days for the rest of the week.

Practice social distancing. When you must leave the house for groceries, keep two carts away – 11 feet, 4 inches – from others.

Stay in touch with one another over the phone. Practice good hygiene. Wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap. Do not use hand sanitizer if you have a bathroom nearby so you do not waste crucial resources.

When you cough and sneeze, cover your face with your elbow. Do not touch your face at all if your hands are not washed or clean. When you use hand sanitizer, do not use an oven or lighter because ethanol in the sanitizer is flammable.

Take this period as an opportunity to learn new things you always wanted to learn and understand. Take this time to convey positive thoughts to one another. We always should. Channel positive affirmations. We should be grateful for the things we have in our lives, our health and our loved ones because they can be taken away from us at any minute.

Know that worrying is not going to change anything. It only will exhaust you and erode your well-being. Instead, transform the worries you have by observing precautions and safety measures from experts.

Discover new hobbies you always wanted to try. Learn a new skill. Try to solve a puzzle. Explore the creativity within you.

If you have a pet, give it the attention and time it seeks from you. Take dancing and zumba online. YouTube offers a lot of free productive videos to stay active and moving.

Focus on the courses you are not good at. Learn to be better at them. Practice new learning methods.

Take up a new language. It may be fun. Discover the hidden parts of you that you have never met before.

This is the right time to start working out if you do not exercise. Moving helps circulate your blood. Complement your exercise by eating good vegetables and fruits to boost your immune system naturally. https://www.healthline.com/health/food-nutrition/foods-that-boost-the-immune-system.

I am currently doing my assignments online, catching up with all my classes, communicating with my professors as clearly and accurately as possible.

I am reading books and painting when I finish my assignments and daily housework. I am learning Tai Chi. I am gardening and growing vegetables and herbs, tending them with love and care.

I enjoy cooking and baking, and I am learning new recipes daily to improve my cooking skills, including getting to know beneficial spices that have healthy properties. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/5-spices-with-healthy-benefits

I am experimenting with new types of foods, especially from different cultural influences, from top chefs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU8my_KmRU4

I am listening to new types of music that I have never heard before when I am doing chores or when I am cooking, such as Bach, Carmen, Warpaint.

I have cleaned closets and cabinets that needed to be organized. I am staying away from 24/7 news headlines. I watch for a limited time to be updated on what is happening around the world, but too much of anything will do you harm instead of good.

I am hopeful for the coming days. It is up to us as a community to control this disease by listening to the protocols given and taking extra precautions.

You are not alone. We are all in this together. Enjoy the simple things in life that we ignore everyday because they are essential to us. My prayers are for everyone around the world. This too, shall pass.
