Women’s Tennis Impressive at First Tournament of the Year

After coming off a program best season, it’s easy to say that there would be some form of a hangover for the Women’s Tennis Team. However at the first tournament of the 2018-2019 season, Kenyon College Invitational in Kenyon, Oh., the State  Women were impressive, competing in five out of the eight singles draws final, and a doubles finals as well.

The big winner from the tournament for was Junior Kierstin Hensley.  The junior from Ashland, Ky. competed in the B singles flight, and A doubles draw where she partnered with senior Laura Isbey. Hensley claimed the singles flight by fighting through three set matches. Hensley and Isbey won the doubles crown by gutting out a 9-7 win.

​Isbey would gut out her first two wins in the A singles flight, before dropping her championship match to the NCAA DIII #16 player. 

​Hannah Kruglova advanced to the E singles flight championship match, before losing the match in three close sets. Sydney Miller advanced to the G flight championship match before losing in three sets as well. Grazielle Pretterotto also advanced to the H flight championship match, before losing as well. 

​“It was a good showing for the first competition of the year,” said Head Coach John Simms. “I learned some things about my players and hopefully they learned some things about themselves. This group has lots of potential but we still have a lot of work to do.”

​The Yellow Jackets next play Sept. 30, at Johnson C. Smith, near Charlotte, N.C.
