Women’s Basketball Win Thriller over Shepherd, Lose to Eventual MEC Champs Glenville State at MEC Tourney

In what was a hard luck season for the Yellow Jacket women’s basketball team, State managed to qualify for the Mountain East Women’s Basketball Tourney held at the Wesbanco Arena in Wheeling, where the Yellow Jackets toppled Shepherd 87-86 in a first round thriller.

After leading 75-61 heading into the fourth quarter, Shepherd scored 25 points to bring the Rams within one of State by the final buzzer.

Freshman Charity Shears led State with 21 points, while Anesha Harmon chipped in 16 points, Amari Grace Scored 11 points. Kalia Cunningham dished out five assists, and Lyrin hatcher pulled down seven rebounds.

Kayla Tibbs scored an impressive 43 points for Shepherd.

“Both teams fought hard from the first minute,” said Mar LaMadrid Coll. “We won thanks to our teamwork.”

State then took on the #1 seed for the MEC Tournament, Glenville State, who eased pass the Yellow Jackets 105-86.

Payton Shears, twin sister of Charity, led State with 24 points. Charity Shears chipped in 14 points, while Kalia Cunningham scored 10 points.

State finishes the 2018-19 season with an overall record of 8-22, and an MEC record of 6-16.
