CHOICES Trains Students to Help Others

Students interested in spreading awareness and learning how to spot red flags among peers can join CHOICES Peer Educators.

The course number for the class is HHP 123 Peer Education. “We are contributing to our community about awareness and prevention techniques, like with sexual assault, mental health, suicide, domestic violence and so much more,” senior Shayna Ellis, president of CHOICES, said.

According to Ellis, the class meets on Fridays, offers three credit hours, is open to any majors and has no prerequisites. Anyone who has taken the class before can come back and enroll in HHP 399.

“We do small giveaways at our tables with other organizations,” Ellis said. “We have a lot of events to spread awareness, and going to those events are part of your grade and in some cases count toward volunteer hours.”

Students can receive national certifications and awards that you receive in their first semester in CHOICES, she said. Students learn how to spot red flags, take different prevention training and learn how to talk to people about their needs, Ellis said.

“We get to travel and go to conferences like the Sexual Assault and Stalking Symposium, where we give presentations about what we learned …. We get to go out to a nice dinner and get free T-shirts at the end of semesters,” Ellis said.

According to Ellis, conferences like the Sexual Assault and Stalking Symposium can count toward 20 to 30 continuing-education hours.
